Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker, one of the most significant masters of modern dance in Europe, has launched a retrospective series entitled Early works: she has revived her choreographies from the period between 1982 and 1987. A part of this series is the one called Bartók/Mikrokosmos, first presented in 1987. In this, as in many of her works from her early period, the basis of her dancer`s imagination was the works significant figures of 20th century music. Besides the pieces of Bartók`s Mikrokosmos series for two pianos the following pieces serve as the musical backdrop to Keersmaeker`s choreographies: György Ligeti`s Monument- Selbstportrait–Bewegung in three movements from 1976 and Bartók`s String Quartet no. 4. The central topic of Keersmaeker`s choreographies is the borderland dividing girlhood from womanhood, and these choreographies follow the structure of the musical pieces closely. 'Structure and emotion support one another' says Keersmaeker. 'This may sound like a cliché, but it lies deep in my very fibre. Emotions have always been a major theme in what I do, but on the other hand there is always a sort of longing for abstract beauty, for an inexorable order that exists in its own right'
